Early Experiments are Proving Out Tank-Free Marine Corps Concept
By Megan Eckstein, U.S. Naval Institute News
| February 16, 2021
Ongoing testing and experimentation are proving the Marine Corps can be more lethal even while being lighter and more maneuverable, as the service evolves to support littoral operations under its Force Design 2030 plan, a top general said today. Lt. Gen. Eric Smith, the deputy commandant for combat development and integration, today described how the Marine Corps’ evolution over the next couple years would allow for a small group of 75 Marines to pose such a great threat that the adversary would have to divert resources to find and counter them.

MC TIMES: Drastic changes coming to Marine Corps rifle qualification: Here’s what you need to know
By Todd South
| December 11, 2019
“It will be more challenging,” Col. Hall, CO, Weapons Training Battalion. That’s because shooters will be qualifying as they’ll fight. They’ll wear combat gear, from helmet to body armor and shoot their assigned weapon, whether that’s an M4, M16 or M27. After years of feedback from marksmanship experts and operational commands across the Corps asking for a more realistic ― and shorter ― shooting qualification, a new experimental course of fire will be rolled out over the coming months. If approved by both the community of shooting experts and command all the way to the commandant, the plan is to implement the new annual rifle qualification by 2021.

US steps up winter-warfare training as global threat shifts
By LOLITA C. BALDOR, AP

The exercise is designed to train troops for the next war — one the U.S. believes will be against a more capable, high-tech enemy like Russia, North Korea or China. The weather conditions on the mountain mimic the kind of frigid fight that forces could face in one of those future hotspots.

SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE ON FISCAL YEAR 2020 NAVY MODERNIZATION PROGRAMS
By SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE
| April 10, 2019
The 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS) identifies a requirement for forward-deployed naval forces that can compete against, deter, and if necessary defeat peer adversaries. As an essential element of those naval forces, Fleet Marine Forces must provide stand-in capabilities to the fleet to facilitate sea denial and sea control operations as part of an integrated naval defense-in-depth or broader naval campaign. Furthermore, the National Defense Strategy clearly identifies the need for change – and rapid change in the form of accelerated modernization in order to arrest and reverse any erosion of our competitive naval advantage. This includes major changes to your naval expeditionary force-in-readiness – the United States Marine Corps.
